One of the best things that ever happened to me was getting fired from my job. It may sound ironic, but losing my "security" made me more confident than ever before — and hungrier. While it's not the most heartwarming experience to get handed the old box and gather up your stockpile of candy and erasers, it's liberating to know that this is a step toward creating your own destiny. The drive to make things work on your own (and find a way to pay for health insurance) is priceless. If you think about it, the times in which we found the most success were when we thought we had nothing to lose. When we were kids learning how to climb the monkey bars, we didn't sit around and think, "Well, gee, what if I don't make it across? What if I get my pants dirty?" We went for it. And if we fell, we got back up and did it again. Everyone should be so lucky to get the boot, because it teaches you how to bootstrap into your own creation. It teaches you more about humility and finding your own way than passing the days working for someone else. The security of employment is a mirage, and there's nothing like shattering it into smithereens to help you see all the potential out there waiting for you to snatch up and call your own!
